The President after reaching Kataragama visited the Kirivehera Rajamaha Vihare and called on its Chief Incumbent the Ven. Aluthwewa Sorotha thera and secured his blessings. Thereafter, he paid homage to the Mahasen Relics Shrine located at Kirivehera. The President declared open the Kirivehera new Wahalkada today. It has been constructed on the Sella-Kataragama road. He then participated in an Alms Giving Pinkama at the official residence of the Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama Maha Devale. This Pinkama is an annual event which is being staged from the ancient past in parallel to the Kataragama Esala Perahera.
He opened the “Bath Dansala” organized opposite the Abhinawaramaya. The President engaged in religious observances at several devales including the Kataragama Maha Devale and secured blessings. He joined in the “Athupandalama” ancient tradition. The “Maadan-Athu” required for the ceremony was brought by Elephants including the “Vasana” tusker. This ancient tradition is also an annual event.
The President observed the expansion of the bridge across the Menik Ganga. He seized the opportunity to have a cordial discussion with the people. Members of the Maha Sangha including the Ven. Aluthwewa Soratha thera abd Parliamentarians were among those present on the occasion.
