Second phase on “English as a Life Skill” programme launched

President Rajapaksa launches the Second phase of the Presidential initiative on “English as a Life Skill” following the successful completion of Stage One.

With the purpose of popularizing the English language as a life skill, it was under the direct supervision of the President that the programme was launched. President Rajapaska was appraised about the success of the first stage. It was organized at Temple Trees. An open debate was also organized in parallel to this event. Initially, 60 percent of English language Teachers has been trained. It is hoped to complete the training of the balance 40 percent before the end of this year. It has been possible under the new programme to take English particularly of very remote villages, expanding spoken and communication English skills countrywide.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Convenor of the Presidential Task Force on English and Information Technology Sunimal Fernando were among the many scholars who expressed their views. Minister Gunawardena pointed out that as a measurement system of English skills of the children, it has been proposed to include spoken English in future examinations. Its purpose is to spread spoken English throughout the country.
