Officials say a 10-year-old boy has been bitten by a shark while swimming off the coast of South Carolina.
Myrtle Beach police Capt. David Knipes said the boy had a cut on his leg and was taken to a local hospital Monday for treatment. University of Florida shark expert George Burgess says photographs he saw indicate a shark bite.
Burgess said it is the second shark attack off the South Carolina coast this year. The other occurred on June 25 off Fripp Island. North Carolina has had four attacks this year, including one off Wrightsville Beach on Saturday.
Burgess maintains the International Shark Attack File and says there have been 66 unprovoked shark attacks off the South Carolina coast since 1837. There have been 40 such attacks along the North Carolina coast.
