Second Phase launched

The Second Phase of the Presidential initiative on English as a Life Skill was launched at a ceremony held at Temple Trees yesterday. The ceremony also marked the successful completion of Phase I of the project which was inaugurated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in June, last year.
This project is launched by the Presidential Task Force on English and IT in coordination with the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Ministries of Education to transform the English language into an essential life skill for communication, employment and access to the outside world through the ICT.
Over 6,358 teachers out of total 21,986 english teachers received 10 day training courses in speaking and communicative English.
The remaining teachers are to be trained within the next five months.
Education Ministry Additional Secretary Hemantha Premathilaka in a letter informed the President that more than 60 percent of English teachers were trained by the project sofar.
The President was also presented with the School Based Assessment Tools on Spoken English by Director of English at the NIE.
