Dog breeder seeks release from prison

A Lowcountry man sentenced to an unprecedented prison term on dogfighting charges is seeking early release from a state penitentiary after serving less than six years of the 40-year sentence.
David Tant’s supporters say he has been a model prisoner who won’t present a threat to the public if released on parole.
But Tant’s parole request, to be heard Wednesday in Columbia, faces opposition from S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster and animal-welfare advocates.
Tant, of North Charleston, has been in state prison since pleading guilty in November 2004 to 41 dogfighting charges, as well as an assault charge.
