Safety officials say the North Carolina man piloting a small plane that crashed into a coastal South Carolina mobile home park was not certified to fly at night.
Media outlets reported Tuesday that the National Transportation Safety Board says Danny Carroll was supposed to returned the rented airplane by 8:30 p.m. July 14 but told operators he would be late because of weather.
Carroll, his wife and their granddaughter died when their single-engine plane crashed into a mobile home park in North Myrtle Beach just before 9 p.m.
The family had been vacationing at the beach and were leaving from Grand Strand Regional Airport to return to Kannapolis, N.C., when the crash happened.
