Garbage dumpers caught in the act will be subject to a fine, police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said today. The spokesman added that the amount the perpetrator was fined would be subject to the court’s discretion.
Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya earlier warned traders not to dump garbage in front of their premises, as part of a national initiative to curb dengue. Over 300 people who had ignored the order were arrested and taken to court.
Jayakody said these 300, along with any other similar violators, would be subject to the fine.
Meanwhile, IGP Balasuriya has set up an ‘Environmental Protection Unit’ to help with the campaign. This Unit will not just handle the task of preventing dengue but also investigate illegal structures and unauthorised tree-felling, among other things.
