Around 100 UNP local officials are to be suspended, said UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.
Attanayake said that the majority of the suspended members were Pradeshiya and Palath Sabha members.
“This is an ongoing process. We are investigating instances. There are some ongoing court cases as well,” Attanayake said.
UNP spokesman Gayantha Karunathilaka said that many of these members had crossed over to the Government, prompting the move.
UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella in an interview with the Leader also highlighted the issue last week. Kiriella said that several Pradeshiya Sabha members had been agitating to be allowed to participate in the ballot to elect the UNP Opposition Leader. “Yet many of these members have crossed to the Government side,” Kiriella said.
