Clearing of pavements from hawkers attributed to zero accidents

Jul 21, 2010 10:31:59 AM - itnnews.lk

The Cinnamon Gardens Police claim that not a single accident had been reported with the eviction of pavement hawkers along Olcott Mawatha in Pettah. Accordingly, OIC of the Traffic branch of the Cinnamon Gardens Police Inspector Sampath Perera attributed all road accidents in the vicinity to pavement hawkers.

Inspector Perera said that accidents do not occur as pedestrians do not travel on the road since the pavements have been cleared. They now use the pavements. They plan to enforce this rule in every part of Colombo. He pointed out that their objective is to free the pavements and facilitate the pedestrians to use the pavements.

He revealed these details at a workshop organized by the Community Police Unit of the Cinnamon Gardens Police. He referred to their decision to install security cameras within the Colombo City to identify faults of vehicles.
