The resettlement of the displaced will be completed within two months. Only certain areas had to be de-mined and booby traps removed.
Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri said there is a progress of 94 percent in the resettlement process. Only a group of 38,000 had to be resettled. Around 16.000 are living with their relatives.
The de-mining is being accelerated with the support of the Army and some international organizations. Accordingly the Governor said the removal of mines is taking place at Pudumathalan and Puthukudiyiruppu and at Karachchi in the Kilinochchi District.
Once the de-mining is completed, the balance IDPs can be resettled in their places of origin. 50,000 houses are to be built and repaired with assistance from the Indian Government. 1000 houses are already under construction. The Governor pointed out that these will be given to the homeless.
