Two dozen abandoned South Carolina dogs have a new "leash" on life thanks to an 18-hour trip to upstate New York.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the dogs were taken from the Palmetto Animal League in Bluffton to the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society of New York on Wednesday.
About 70 percent of the dogs brought into the South Carolina shelter each year have to be destroyed.
Tina Murray with the shelter in Menands, N.Y., just outside Albany, says they have a big demand for dogs.
Officials say transporting dogs to other states is becoming more common, helping shelters with high euthanasia rates and those that have a demand for dogs.
