District Secretaries are vested with the responsibility of implementing programmes at the District level for the control of dengue. In addition to the National Committee set up under the Presidential Task Force, The District Secretaries are tasked with the implementation of Committees at regional level.
A special gathering of District Secretaries chaired by Minister Maithripala Sirisena was organized to brief about the programme. Dengue has already spread in 15 Districts and in 65 Divisional Secretariat Divisions. According to the Health Ministry the disease has been reported from almost all parts of the country.
It is also found that around 21,954 Dengue patients had been found from the month of January up to date and 158 deaths reported. The highest number of cases has been detected from the Colombo District. Many cases have also been reported from the Gampaha, Kalutara, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Ratnapura Districts. The Health Ministry said that a major task is vested with the District Committees in activities related to the control of the disease. These Committees should submit a monthly review of its programmes to the Ministry. In the meantime, special training was imparted to six Physicians and child specialists in Thailand on the treatment of dengue. These specialists will educate the other doctors.
