The annual Vel Festival celebrated by the Hindus and held in honour of Lord Sri Murukan is organized on a grand scale after a lapse of 16 years. The President warmly greeted the Perahera near Temple Trees.
According to Hindu traditions the period 15th July to 15th August is considered as the “Aandi” month. The Vel Festival takes pride of place among the Pinkamas being organized during this period to invoke blessings on the country and the nation. It was not possible to organize the Vel Festival on a grand scale since 1983 due to terrorist activities. A notable feature is the conduct of the procession with the participation of the Head of State.
The Vel procession which commenced from the Sammankodu Sri Kadiravelayuda Swami Kovil wended its way up to the Sammankodu Sri Kadiravelayuda Kovil in Bambalapitiya this afternoon. The procession was warmly received by President Rajapaka near Temple Trees. He then offered flowers to the Kataragama God statue and received blessings.
The Hindu devotees highly appreciated the opportunity they had received to the Vel procession in all its glory with the contribution of the President following the consolidation of the religious rights of the Hindu devotees with the dawn of permanent peace in the country.
