Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya, at a press briefing called at the Police Headquaters this afternoon, denied police involvement in the death of Ruhuna university student Susantha Bandara.
Susantha Bandara, a third year student at the Ruhuna university had succumbed, early this morning, to injuries suffered on the 18 of last month (June), allegedly at the hands of the police.
As many as 2000 students in Matara had rallied this morning in protest against police brutality, following the news of his death due to internal bleeding, and promised to continue their protests until justice was served.
IGB Balasuriya however, at the press conference, denied the role of the police in death of Susantha Bandara, saying that medical reports had clearly stated that Bandara had died due to an aneurysm in the brain that had caused internal bleeding.
He had added however; possibly due to the students agitations for an idependent inquiry into the death and promised, continued protests, that the Criminal Investigations Department would be conducting further investigations into circumstances of the death.
