Poachers Arrested With Wilpattu Elephant Tusks

Jul 24, 2010 2:24:27 AM - thesundayleader.lk

Three men were arrested in the area of Kobeiganei yesterday by Baladora Police, whilst transporting on motorbike, the tusks of an elephant they had killed at the Wilapattu National Park.

The three arrestees, residents of the Adampanei, Novichchiyagama area, who were taken into custody by a team of policemen led by the OIC of the Baldora Police Station Inspector Abeyratne, are to be produced before the Hettipola Court today.

Only between 5-7% of wild elephants in Sri Lanka are tuskers and illegal poaching for ivory contributes to making them an endangered species,  in a country that between the years 1996 and 2006, recorded as many as 100 elephant killings a year.
