The Government’s desire is to make a contribution of 75 Billion Rupees to the national economy through Coconut cultivation. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said a campaign has been unveiled to plant 20 Million coconut plants throughout the country including the North and East,.
The Prime Minister was speaking at the 16th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Coconut Growers’ Association. It was organized at the Mihilaka Hall of the BMICH.
The Prime Minister opined that coconut cultivators were at present making a valuable contribution of 24 Billion Rupees to the national economy. If cultivation is expanded as planned, it would be possible to increase this figure to 75. In addition, a large number of jobs can be generated. The Prime Minister said if Coconut is cultivated in this manner, every part of the tree can be fruitfully used.
Coconut cultivators and officials were present. An exhibition of coconut based industrialists was also organized.
