A beautiful day saw the contenders for the Pin Fernando Trophy 2010 teeing off on Saturday July 10 with their first objective being to see their name on the qualifying list.
The best net score was returned by Suren Vaas – a steadily improving golfer who showed a glimpse of his true potential by breaking the gross 80 barrier and carding a 79. With his current handicap of 12 he was a clear winner for the best qualifier prize on a score of net 67. He was closely followed by a past winner of the Pin Fernando Trophy, Pheroze Billimoria who shot a net 68 off his handicap of 6 and pipped another improving golfer Ryan Dean to second place based on a better back nine.
A total of 142 golfers who were vying for this trophy named after Sri Lanka’s legendary golfer Pin Fernando teed off but only the best 32 net scores qualify for the match play segment. Amongst the qualifiers was Ranil Pathirana the current holder of this prestigious trophy waiting for the chance to display his match play skills and defend his title.
Other past winners other than Mithun Perera failed to enter the next phase. Mithun in a class by himself breezed in with a gross 67 to win the prize for the best gross score but by virtue of his plus 3 handicap had to add these strokes to card a net 70. The following are the 32 qualifiers who will be drawn to play a match-play knockout format over the next few weeks until the Final Winner emerges to claim this trophy now seen as the ultimate challenge for the golfers of the Royal Colombo Golf Club.
United Tractors being the family business of the late Pin Fernando, continue to be the proud sponsors of this tournament. “It’s always great to be associated with a great name, a great sport and a great club like the Royal Colombo Golf Club said Manager Marketing Services of UTE, Nalin Manorathne.
