Rugby Feast In The Hills

The Central  Province Rugby Football Union conducted a grand inter club seven a side tournament last Sunday (18) at the Nittawela rugby stadium.  It was excellent rugby where all the participating teams gave off their best.

The competition was handled by the experienced Tuan Dole, who did a grand job to start the tournament on time and also end at the right time.

Twelve teams were seen in action — Old Antonians, Trinity Youth, Old Vidyarthians, Old Kingswoodians,  Municipal Play Grounds, Dimbulla, Dickoya, Katugastota RFC, Police , Army,  Matale RFC,
The occasion was attended by Governor of the Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, and associated with him was Patron of the CPRFU, Brig. Japana Jayawardane,  Brg. Udaya Ariyaratne, Malik Samarawickrema, Dr. Sarath  Kapuwatte and the President of CPRFU, Mohan Samarakoon.

For the first time, the winners and runner-up were presented with cash awards, thanks to SLRFU that came in with a cash donation of Rs. 140,000. There were also donations from well wishers, which made the tournament a grand success. The competition took off on a league basis and later it was on knockout with Cup, Plate and Bowl championships.

CUP CHAMPIONSHIP – Old Kingswoodians who are under the watchful eyes of Nalaka Weerakody beat Dickoya MCC to win the cup championship. When the final whistle was blown Old Kingswoodians had scored 24 point again Dickoya’s 5. On the way to the finals Old Kingswoodians beat Army SC by 17 points to 12  and Dickoya MCC beat  Katugastota RFC  34 nil.

PLATE CHAMPIONSHIP — Old Antonians  with some top players, pocketed the Plate Championship  beating their arch rival Trinity Youth by 17 points to 10.  This game was a close one; Trinity Youth had many chances of scoring but failed due to wet ball.

In the Semis Old Antonians  beat Matale RFC 36 – nil,  and Trinity Youth beat Old Vidyarthians 15-7. In this Plate competition the rugby dished out was of a very high standard and the ball handling was superb.
BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP – Dimbulla ACC, came out with a superb display of rugby to demolish Municipal Play Grounds team by 21 points to 14.  This was one of the best finals, where both teams played an excellent game of rugby.   In the Semis Dimbulla ACC beat Matale RFC and Municipal Play Grounds beat Police.
