Religious programmes mark Esala Full Moon Poya

Jul 25, 2010 4:26:18 AM - itnnews.lk

Today is Esala Full Moon Poya Day, which signifies many important incidents in the history of the Sasana.

It was on Esala Full Moon Poya day that the Buddha who perceived with his divine eye that his former colleagues Kondanna, Bhaddiya, Wappa, Mahanama and Assaji, the five ascetics who later came to be known as the five Bikkhus were intelligent enough to understand the Dhamma he had apprehended, visited the Deer Park at Isipatana where they were staying at the time. On having convinced them that he was now fully enlightened, he delivered his first discourse to them and thus, out of compassion for the world and for the good and benefit of the many, began his mission that lasted 45 years from his Enlightenment to the attainment of Nibbana.

Religious programmes are being organized countrywide in almost all temples to mark this religious day. Sil, Meditation and dhamma sermons are among the religious programmes organized.

The “Amadam Sisilasa” Dhamma sermon was organized today with the participation of President Rajapaksa. It was held at the Medamulana Residence in Weeraketiya. The Dhamma sermon was delivered by Senior lecturer Ven. Kanattagoda Saddharatana thera First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and many Dhamma School children were among those present.

Meanwhile ITN’s “Savanak Res” Poya programme is being telecast live from the Kirivehera temple in Kataragama.
