The Government’s effort is to raise the local media culture up to international standards through the proposed Media development Authority. This has been underscored by the Government Information Department.

Minister Keheliya Rambukwella recently announced of the Government’s intention to set up a Media Development Authority. The Authority aims at ensuring due recognition for the print and electronic media. Further, it will incorporate measures to improve professionalism while ensuring that journalism is recognized as a profession with its own quality standards and norms. The proposed authority will help media to further enhance its professionalism and efficiency and create a background to work competitively with the rapid growth taking place in Science, technology and other fields.

The freedom ensured in the constitution to express views should be solidified. The Government also stressed that it has no harsh regulatory mechanism and does not intend to obstruct the freedom of journalists imposing regulations. A statement issued by the Information Department pointed out that since the Medium Development Authority Bill is in the initial stages of drafting, proposals and suggestions are being entertained from media organizations as well as journalists.
