Sri Lanka has urged stern action against illegal and irregular migration.
The Appeal was made by Deputy Minister of External Affairs Gitanjana Gunawardena at an ASEAN regional Forum. He urged the world community to act against illegal and irregular migration.
The Deputy Minister told the 17th ASEAN Regional Forum in Hanoi, Vietnam that originating, transit and receiving countries should have transparent policies to discourage illegal migration and irregular movement of people.
He said “Granting asylum or refugee status on perceived claims of persecution will only be a covert encouragement for illegal and irregular migration.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted the importance of marshalling collective efforts to curtail transnational operations of terrorists.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister Dao Viet Trung has expressed willingness to reopen a Resident Diplomatic Mission in Colombo by early next year. The two countries mark 40 years of diplomatic relations this year.
