Private bus strike called off

Jul 26, 2010 12:01:57 PM - itnnews.lk

The private bus strike scheduled for tomorrow has been called off. It is in response to a discussion Presidents of private bus associations had with Western Provincial Transport Minister Upali Kodikara. Clarifications were made at a media briefing held today on this discussion.

Minister Upali Kodikara said that an agreement has been reached under their development plan to provide hostel facilities, water and sanitary facilities at the new bus stands that are planned to be built. As such, a consensus was reached to do away with the idea of a strike.

President of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association Gemunu Wijeratne noted that agreement had been reached to call off the proposed bus strike. As such, commuters should not have unnecessary fear. He assured to operate buses to as usual within the Western Province.

President of the All Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Federation Stanley Fernando pointed out that they would not get involved in any strike. He said this assurance was given to the Minister.
