A programme is to be launched to popularize the historic Bogala Mines among local as well as foreign tourists. The Bogala Mines was launched 163 years ago, that is in 1847.
At present the number of employees exceeds 2000. It has depth of 275 meters. It is considered as the island’s ancient and deepest mine.
A notable feature is the minerals secured with a high carbon percentage. It is also located in an environment rife with biodiversity.
Several artifacts have also been uncovered by many eras in which excavation was carried out with various strategies. The Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council which took into consideration its historical value has included it in their environmental friendly tourism promotion drive.
Tourists will get an opportunity to gain experiences going down deep as 1200 meters through the Tunnel Network. A delegation including Parliamentarian Kanaka Herath recently undertook a visit to the location.
