Here's why summer storms are so 'scattered'

Jul 27, 2010 6:37:00 AM - thestate.com

Scattered thunderstorms hit all over the Southeast, but as local residents are rediscovering this summer, central South Carolina’s geography can make those storms capital-letter SCATTERED.

Sunday night, portions of Northeast Richland got nearly an inch of rain, tree-bending wind and scary thunder and lightning. Lexington County got nothing.

A few days earlier, a gauge near Columbia Metropolitan Airport in Lexington County registered nearly 4 inches of rain in two hours, Five Points in Columbia flooded, and not a drop fell southeast of I-77.

You can blame it partially on the Midlands’ unique microclimates — Lake Murray’s cool waters, the urban heat island of downtown Columbia and even the heat-reflecting soil of the ribbon of prehistoric beach known as the sandhills.
