Australian cricket great Setve Waugh has defended the Aussie umpires against a racial bias when they called Muttiah Muralitharan for chucking in one and a half decades ago.
"Forget racial thing, that card always gets played" Waugh had told media in India where he is attending a commercial venture.
"It was certainly not a racist thing. We should celebrate that he (Murali) has played so successfully," he said.
Waugh pointed out that the umpires who called Murali has face the consequences. He said it was a big decision for the umpire to call Murali and said that the action is open to debate.
"Some people had some things to say, but at the end of the day, he is a different element, who has on 67 occasions taken 5 wickets in a game" Waugh explained.
"Murali is a great player who has created an unbeatable and amazing record of 800 Test wickets. We admire the skills he has brought to the game" Waugh added.
