NTUC Condemns Govt’s Reaction To Uni Lecturers’ Protest

Jul 28, 2010 9:20:47 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The National Trade Union Center (NTUC) called on the government to stop intimidating the university lecturers who were engaged in a token strike yesterday (27) demanding for a revision in their salaries and to withdraw the circulars issued claiming the times used for the protest be deducted from the lecturers’ personal leave.

NTUC Head and JVP politburo member K.D. Lalkantha said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a circular asking university authorities to deduct the time taken for the token strike from the lecturer’s personal leave.

He said that close to 4,000 university lecturers had yesterday launched a token strike demanding a fair revision in their salaries.

“The salary issues of the university lecturers are a serious issue. The brain drain has had an adverse impact on the country,” Lalkantha said.

He also said the lecturers were compelled to launch a token strike as a result of the false promises made to them by the government.
