A new programme is being launched for the production of rice varieties with medicinal properties that provides a cure for a number of illnesses. This was stated by Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
He said research should be carried out towards producing varieties of paddy suitable for export. He said that Sri Lanka is now in a position to export rice. Varieties of rice with medicinal properties for diseases such as diabetes and other common diseases are vital. He said foreigners were looking for such varieties and Sri Lanka is currently exporting only about 4000 tons. It has to be increased up to 65 to 70 thousand tons. He said that all resources should be utilized to achieve this target.
The Minister was speaking during an inspection tour of the Batalagoda Paddy Research Institute. The Minister said that the fertilizer subsidy will not be slashed.
