Within 16 days, the basin of the Hambantota International Harbour will be filled with water. Sri Lankans have a rare opportunity of having a view of the base of the harbour.

The preparation of the basin of the harbour is now in the final stages. It will be filled with water on the 15th of this month. The number of visitors to view the affiliated constructions is increasing daily. Among them are a majority of school children.

The initial construction of the harbour was launched on 7th June 2007. Construction is being carried out in three stages. The area spans about 2000 hectares. Three anchorages are being constructed after the removal of mud from 43 hectares at Karaganlewaya under stage one. The sea access route has a depth of 16 metres while the circle for the handling of ships is 600 metres. The jetty has a length of 1000 metres. Construction work on the oil terminal is also underway.
