Russia assumes Security Council Presidency

Jul 31, 2010 12:32:12 PM - itnnews.lk

The Russian Federation is to assume the monthly rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council.

A UN statement said that Russia will be assuming the Presidency tomorrow. In late June this year, the Russian federation had slammed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s decision to appoint a panel of experts to advice him on Sri Lanka.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement criticized the UN Chief for not soliciting the opinion of the Security Council or the General Assembly before appointing the panel. It was Russia who first raised objections against this committee and expressed its disillusion.

Russia which has a proper awareness on Sri Lanka took the initiative in defeating proposals put forward by certain countries against Sri Lanka on various instances. Russia was one of the countries which appreciated the government for the victory handed over to the people by the Sri Lankan Government defeating terrorism.
