Chairman of the Maharagama Urban Council (MUC) has been accused of flouting the monetary ordinance of the Urban Council, Vice Chairman of MUC Senaka Kalubowila told The Sunday Leader.
In order to reserve a return air ticket to Japan, Chairman of MUC, Kanthi Kodikara on July 23, has issued a council cheque — Bank of Ceylon Maharagama Branch (cheque no: 046555) to Gabo Travels without getting the council’s approval.
“Knowing certainly that the MUC would not allocate money for a tour abroad to Kodikara, she has hurriedly issued a cheque to Gabo Travels without informing the Council, which is totally against the Urban Council’s financial regulations,” Kalubowila said.
According to Kalubowila, Kodikara has traveled to Japan on July 26 to attend a mayors’ conference, although she is not a mayor of a municipal council, but only a chairman of an urban council.
Kalubowila further claimed that Kodikara has not only flouted monetary ordinance of the urban council, but has failed to get Governor Alavi Moulana’s approval to travel abroad.
However Governor Moulana denied Kalubowila’s claim and told The Sunday Leader that Kodikara was granted permission to travel abroad.
Refuting Governor Moulana’s claim, Kalubowila said that it was Moulana and his Additional Secretary Samarasinghe that confirmed to him on July 27 about Kodikara’s failure to get approval to go abroad.
“I was told by the Governor and his Additional Secretary that even by July 27 they had not received any papers from Kodikara’s office seeking approval to travel abroad,” Kalubowila said.
