The feast of St. Anne’s Church in Thalawila commenced this morning despite the forest fire that raged in the area yesterday (31) evening.
A forest fire broke out yesterday in the Puttalam area in close proximity to St. Anne’s Church, which at the time was preparing for the feast scheduled to take place on today (1).
The fire has reportedly destroyed about five hectares of coconut land belonging to the Kelepalliya Church, which is adjacent to the St. Anne’s Church in Thalawila.
Security forces personnel were deployed along with the fire brigade to douse the fire.
Parish priest of Kelepalliya Church and St. Anne’s Church, Rev. Father Nelson Perera told the media that the two churches had not been damaged by the fire and that the St. Anne’s feast will be held as scheduled.
Thousands of devotees from around the island participate in the annual feast of St. Anne’s in Thalawila.
