A New Insurance Policy will be launched for the benefit of over 67 thousand fishermen spread throughout the country. Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that measures are underway to grant a pension for fishermen who are over 60 years of age.
The Minister opined that a fitting Insurance Scheme will be launched to help fishermen during a sudden disaster. In case of boats are drifted away and the fishermen are taken into custody, Action will be initiated to provide an allowance to the particular family for one year. In addition measures will be taken to re build schools and hospitals in fishing villages. Infrastructure such as road will be built while ensuring water and electricity supplies. Education of children in the fishing villages will be upgraded. The Minister added that action will be initiated to implement the Fisheries Convention in October.
The Minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Kalutara District Office of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department. Financial assistance will come from the Post Tsunami Coastal Rehabilitation and Development Programme of the International Agricultural Fund. The cost will be in the region of 36 million rupees.
