Defending Clifford Cup champions Kandy Sports Club clinched the rugby double when they became champions of the Caltex Clifford Cup rugby tournament by beating the challengers Navy Sports Club by 26 points (four tries, two penalties) to 11 (one try, one drop goal, one penalty) in the finals played before a record crowd at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday. At half time Kandy were in command leading 16-6.
It was one of the hardest fought battles ever in a rugby match in the hill capital.
Kandy’s forwards were outstanding in the set pieces and loose play while the Sailors put disappointing display and allowed the Kandy team to get on top of them and they never recovered from this.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the chief guest and he distributed the awards. Perhaps the first time the head of State had made such a presentation at a rugby match in Kandy.
The match got off to a brisk start and with almost the kick off Navy were awarded a 20-metre penalty but their place kicker and stand off Dev Anand paid the penalty for taking too long to take the kick and referee revoked this decision to a scrum.
