An agreement has been signed with regard to setting up an Eye Bank.
The Health Ministry said that the agreement in this connection was signed with the Singaporean Eye Bank. Secretary to the Health Ministry Dr. Ravindra Ruberu signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry.
The Ministry believes it to be the largest Eye Bank in Asia. The Eye Banks in other countries provide eyes on financial basis while all Eye Banks in Sri Lanka provide them free of charge.
The Bank will also be engaged in research as well. The Health Ministry said that this would provide opportunity to carryout Cornea transplant for the first time in the country.
Although eye donations are being made in the country, a programme has not been implemented at the state level. The Health Ministry said that this would provide a solution for this requirement.
