Construction work on the Hambantota International Airport will be expedited. Work on stage one has been stepped up.
The airport is being built at a cost of 209 Million US dollars. With the building of the new airport, it would be possible to further streamline air flights. Construction is being carried out in an area spanning 800 hectares under stage one. Deputy Miniser Rohitha Abeygunawardena pointed out that the airport will generate thousands of jobs.
It is hoped to provide air transport facilities for about one million passengers annually. Chairman of the Airport and Aviation Company Prasanna J. Wickramasuriya was confident of completing 30,000 flights per year. Deputy Ministers Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Dayasritha Tissera and a group of officials monitored the construction work of the airport.
