Basil Jayawardena slaughtered MCA Committee Vetarans when he thrashed their bowlers and sent their fieldsmen on a leather hunt to score an unbeaten, whirlwind 76 runs off just 43 deliveries and guide Lanka Cavaliers to a convincing nine wicket win in theirAnnual Tyrone De Silva Challenge Trophy fixture at the MCA grounds yesterday. Giving Jayawardena support from the other end was Nalin De Alwis who stroked a polished, unbeaten 51 runs to add an unfinished 106 runs for the second wicket.
Winning the toss and taking first lease of the wicket, MCA Committee Veterans with former Sri Lanka ’cap’ Gamini Wickramsinghe turning the hands of the clock to top score with 54 runs, posted 142 runs in their allotted overs. While another veteran of many moons, Roshan Iddamalgoda displayed he had not lost anything of his youthful self by hammering an undefeated 51 off 44 deliveries. Veteran Ishak Sahabdeen was the pick of the Cavalier bowlers with 2 wickets for 18 runs.
When Lanka Cavaliers began their chase it was only a matter of time with Jayawardena and De Alwis at the creases.
In a magnanimous gesture, the President of the MCA, Neil Perera knowing that the writing was on the wall for his side came on to bowl the last over in what could well be his final appearance prior to retirement from the office of president to concede the winning runs.
