The UNP today (3) denied any knowledge of a meeting between the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that has been highlighted in the media during the past few days.
Speaking to The Sunday Leader UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that contrary to media reports there was no meeting scheduled between the President and Wickremesinghe.
“I too saw these media reports claiming there is a meeting today between the President and the Opposition Leader. I inquired about it yesterday and I was informed by the party leader that there was no such meeting,” he said.
The media since Sunday (1) published stories that the President and Wickremesinghe were scheduled to meet for key talks on Tuesday (3).
Attanayake however said there was no such discussion according to Wickremesinghe.
When asked if a meeting has been scheduled between the government and the UNP to discuss the abolishing of the Executive Presidency and formation of an Executive Premiership, Attanayake said there was no such meeting planned yet.
