Underdeveloped Vihares in remote areas are to be rebuilt. The programme will be implemented in parallel to a series of ceremonies organized to mark the 2600th Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi celebrations. The Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Committee met under the patronage of President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday.
The year starting from Wesak Full Moon Poya Day in 2011 to the Wesak Full Moon Poya Day in 2012 is declared the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Year. It is planned to implement several programmes during this year. The President announced that the festivities should be organized in a manner ensuring the rights of all other faiths. The programmes should be planned to consolidate religious co-operation as well as religious belief.
The President gave instructions to improve underdeveloped Vihares protecting the archaeological values while giving due attention to places of worship in the North and East. Attention was drawn to the appointment of a Think-Tank for the promotion of the Pali Language. It is the desire to present honorary awards to Bhikkus who play a significant role in the propogation of the Theravadi Buddha Dhamma. A distinguished gathering including representatives of the clergy and the laity along with Committee Chairman the Ven. Miyangoda Vijitha thera was present.
