Construction work on the Matara – Colombo Expressway will be completed by April next year. This assurance has been given by Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva.
The Deputy Minister said that work on the road network will be completed by April next year. This will help the public to travel between Colombo and Matara within a short period. He said if this forecast does not come true, the officer who gave instruction and he would go home.
Construction work on the Matara – Colombo expressway in many areas is in the final stage. Highways Secretary Wasantha Karannagoda was optimistic that the expenditure incurred on the project can be recovered within the next few years.
Mr. Karannagoda also gave an assurance to declare open the highway by next April. He also said that they planned to declare open the Katunayake Expressway by June or July in the year 2012. Plans are afoot to declare open the Colombo Outer circle road by the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014. It is also expected to declare open the Colombo – Kandy expressway in the year 2015. He pointed out that the cost incurred on all roads can be recovered within the next eight years particularly through the Tourism industry.
Meanwhile, construction work on the Colombo – Katunayake expressway is now in progress. The project is being launched with assistance from the Chinese Government. The work is due to be completed by November 2012. The Government’s desire is to complete work on expressways totaling 278 kilometres countrywide within the next four years. The total cost will be 277 Billion rupees.
