A beef processing plant in Lexington County that has closed twice in about 2 1/2 years is opening once again.

Augusta-based FPL Food LLC is reopening its West Columbia facility, employing about 75 people, according to the S.C. Department of Commerce.

The plant was closed in December 2007 when ownership changed hands, reopened in April 2008 under FPL and closed again December 2008. FPL at that time cited difficulties arising from the recession. It shifted it operations back to its Augusta facility.

The 75,000-square-foot facility had employed as many as 150 workers in 2000 while under the ownership of OSI Group of Aurora, Ill.

FPL bills itself and the largest privately held beef provider in the Southeast. Founded in 1966, Its products include taco filling, individually frozen ground beef patties, seasoned beef fajita strips, filet of beef tenderloins and beef cube steak, according to its Website.
