Plans are afoot to network the main post offices in the country.
The Government is considering in launching the programme within the next few days. It will be jointly handled by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication and the Moratuwa University. There are 647 main post offices in the island. Secretary to the Ministry of Telecommunication Ashoka Jayasekera said by linking the main post offices, it will be able to make more efficient the payment of water, electricity and other bills.
The Government has allocated 300 million rupees for the entire project which will include repairs and the provision of computers to post offices. It is also planned to introduce new technology for the dispatch of telegrams. The Ministry Secretary pointed out by next year, it is planned to network the 3400 sub post offices.
