Trial in the sedition case against the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko is set to commence before a sessions court in Chennai on September 6th
the MDMK leader appeared before judge P Bhoopalan, who framed the sedition and other charges against him. After the charges were read out to him, Vaiko told the judge that he would not deny having made the speech for which the case was registered. However, he said he would certainly oppose the charges laid against him.
According to the Q Branch Police, Vaiko and his erstwhile party colleague M Kannappan had participated in a meeting on October 21st 2008 and made speeches in support of banned organisations. Vaiko was arrested on October 23 and released from prison on November 6th the same year. However, when the charge sheet was filed in October 2009, Kannappan’s name had been dropped by the prosecution.
