The Katunayake Customs say comprehensive investigations are being carried out into the recovery of foreign currency valued at 120 million rupees from under a seat of an airplane.
This currency haul was detected in an Emirates Aircraft which was due to fly to Dubai from the Katunayake International Airport. The Katunayake Customs seized the cash which was wrapped in carbon paper and was stored in ten paper bags. Customs said there were currencies of countries such as Japan, Switzerland, the UK, Sweden, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait and Denmark.
The AK654 flight had arrived from the Maldives to Katunayake Investigations are being carried out on several directions to determine as to how the currency notes were taken into the aircraft and placed under the seat. A team including the Customs Superintendent Parakrama Basnayake is engaged in the investigations.
