President Rajapaksa makes a sudden visit to the Colombo Port. The purpose of the visit was to monitor the work on the expansion of the Harbour.
Already 45 percent of the expansion work has been completed. It is planned to complete the work by the year 2012. Three kilometers of the breakwater that is coming up under the project has been built. After the inspection of the expansion activities the President monitored activities at the container terminal. Thereafter, the President gave instructions to Deputy Ministers Dayasritha Tissera and Rohitha Abeygunawardena to further streamline activities related to container handling, plan out the construction of the new terminal, enhance transport facilities for an internal train service.
The President also inspected vehicles terminal at the Port premises. He instructed the relevant officials to expedite the clearance of vehicles with the support of the Customs Director General.
