Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today (4) called on the government to inform parliament of its stance on the actions of Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva who tied a public official to a tree yesterday (3).
Wickremesinghe asked the government to make clear its stance on whether it supports Silva’s action, when he tied a Samurdhi official to a tree for not attending a dengue prevention programme in his electorate.
The Opposition Leader made this statement in Parliament and said Silva had not only violated the Fundamental Rights in the constitution but also several sections in the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, Silva told parliament that he did not tie the Samurdhi officer to a tree yesterday.
He said the officer had tied himself in order to set an example to others to support the anti-dengue programme.
Silva also read a letter from the Samurdhi officer.
