Voters in a South Carolina town whose existence is being challenged in court have elected a new mayor.
Several media outlets report that voters in James Island near Charleston on Tuesday elected Bill Woolsey as mayor, rejecting incumbent Mary Clark, the only mayor the town has known.
Woolsey collected about 40 percent of the vote to about 20 percent for Clark. Three other candidates also ran.
The town has incorporated three times since the 1990s, but the first two incorporations were tossed out after court challenges from neighboring Charleston.
Charleston has again appealed the current incorporation to the state Supreme Court. A ruling is expected next year.
