President Rajapaksa undertakes a sudden tour of the Colombo Harbour to monitor the development work.
45 percent of the Colombo Port expansion project has already been completed. It is due to be completed by the year 2012. A new breakwater is under construction. Already work on three kilometers has been competed. The President visited the harbour this morning to inquire into the work related to the expansion programme. He visited the container yard after monitoring the work on the expansion of the harbour. After giving instructions to streamline the activities at the container yard, the President told the officials to plan out the construction of a new yard. He emphasized the need to create an environmental friendly atmosphere within the harbour premises.
The President gave instructions to Deputy Minsiter Dayasritha Tissera and Rohitha Abeygunawardena to launch an internal train service to enhance transport facilities. The President also observed the vehicle yard at the precincts of the harbour. Instructions were also given to the relevant authorities to expedite the clearance of vehicles at the yard. Chairman of the Ports Authority Dr. Priyath Banduwickrema and Secretary to the Ports Minsitry Ranjith De Silva were among those present.
