Grants have been allocated for more large scale projects under the Kandy City Mega Development Programme. Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the required grants have been allocated by the President under the “Kandurata Udanaya” Programme. Plans are afoot to develop the City road network to minimize traffic congestion as well as build a two kilometre underground road from Bogambara to Bu-welikada.
The Minister said he believed if this work is carried out, the City will be developed to a greater extent. There are six acres where the Prison is housed and the area spanning in its environs is seven acres. Altogether there are 13 acres. Various political leaders took note of it but they did nothing. However, initial work to develop the city has already been undertaken. The President has immediately given 500 million rupees. The Peradeniya town will be relocated at Iriyagama and the necessary plans have already been crafted. The Minister pointed out that the entrance to the city will be developed to suit the tourism industry.
The Minister clarified details of the development programme centred on the Kandy at a media briefing today Highways Secretary Wasantha Karannagoda pointed out that that it will soon be possible to reach Colombo from Kandy within 45 minutes once the work on the Colombo-Kandy Expressway is completed. He told journalists that plans are afoot to kick off development of the Highways from next year. It will be mooted in two stages. The firt stage will be from Kadawata to Ambepussa while the second stage will be the stretch from Ambepussa to Katugastota. The Expressway will have four lanes initially with provisions to expand it to six lanes.
