Parliament agreed today to reject a Bill moved by Opposition member Ravi Karunayake as a Private Motion. A vote was taken up to decide whether the Bill should be taken up for debate. However, it was rejected with a majority of votes.
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced that 34 votes had been cast in favour of debating the motion, while 87 votes had been cast against it. Accordingly no permission can be granted to debate the motion. He said that when a private members motion is presented, members have the right to oppose according to Standing Orders. Therefore, the Speaker emphasized that he took the next suitable step and thereafter no further discussions are needed
