Parliament has approved new regulations under the Weedicides Control Act.
Deputy Minister Jagath Pushpakumara said the President has given instructions to accelerate the Agrarian Development Act.
Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa is also looking into it in order to provide relief to the tenant farmers. He said that the act has been forwarded to the Legal Draftsman’s Department and relief will be provided as soon as it will be returned.
Parliamentarian Ven. Ellawala Medananda thera said the traditional methods of farming should be taken into consideration when formulating a suitable method of cultivation for the country.
He said that research should be conducted on indigenous methods of repelling pests when launching work in this connection.
Parliamentarian Ranjith Soysa said that there is a need for the Government to build a monopoly in importing and distributing weedicides and other chemicals. He proposed that the Minister should intervene in this connection.
